What To Do When Your Air Conditioner Freezes 8/24/2016

When you see your air conditioning unit is freezing over in peak summer months, it is definitely a cause for worry. This situation is unusual and can lead into the breakdown of your unit. So, if you want that your AC run efficiently throughout the season, consider the following D-I-Y tips. This will unfreeze, prevent and maintain your air conditioning unit.

  1. Switch the unit off completely before cleaning – If you clean your unit with the ac on, it will freeze more and you would have to remove more debris to clear the area further. Once you turn it off, allow the unit to defrost automatically before initiating the cleaning process. As soon as it defrosts, check the air filters and remove the dust and dirt from it. Place them back after cleaning and switch on the AC unit. Check the air flow to see if it has resolved the problem. If the problem still persists, call your nearest air conditioner expert to examine the unit more closely. But, if the problem is resolved, repeat the cleaning process every fortnight so that your unit runs at full efficiency.
  2. Clean the coils – If you want to try more and do not wish to call the air conditioner expert too soon, check the refrigerant levels and the coils. Remove the dust and debris around the cooling fins and evaporator coils that will ensure a cleaner and more supply of air. However, please note that you use a soft toothbrush to remove the unwanted dust from the coils.
  3. For consistent cooling, check the air conditioning unit’s on/off cycle – As soon as you have defrosted and cleaned up the unit, turn it on and check how much time it has taken to cool the house as per the temperature set on the thermostat. If you see that the air conditioner doesn’t get automatically turned off after reaching the desired level of temperature on the thermostat, it is likely that there is a broken part, blown fuse or any other problem.

If you have tried all the steps above and still unable to seek a concrete solution for the freezing, it is highly recommended that you call your trusted and local HVAC expert. Ultimately, he will suggest you if any component needs repairing or if the replacement is in line. Take charge of the situation before it goes out of hand.
